My Productivity Origin Story

My manager didn’t get my vacation request.

I submitted it well in advance. Everything was done by the book. My anxiety was building.

Now I had to talk to him directly.

I just wanted to know if my time off was approved.

I worked hard and earned time off. Why hadn’t my vacation request been approved? Was there an issue?

There was an issue-my manager missed my email.

My manager’s inability to manage his email pushed me towards productivity.

As it turns out, Outlook only showed 25 emails in the default pane. My email was #26. Out of sight, out of mind.

He gave me verbal approval for my vacation time.

I offered to coach him on getting to “Inbox Zero”. This was a concept I had just learned about from Merlin Mann and David Allen. He accepted.

Now I needed to learn enough about email productivity to teach it.

Sometimes you need to be the productivity change you want to see in the world.
